That industrial base produces a long tail of suppliers: machine shops, fabricators, electrical contractors, packaging firms, hauliers and specialist engineering consultancies. Many work to the standards and schedules of much larger customers yet run on older job management software, paper travellers and spreadsheets maintained by one experienced person. Hauliers and warehouse operators working with the ports juggle booking slots, driver hours and customer portals that do not talk to each other. And the borough's service businesses in Billericay, Wickford and the town itself compete for customers who expect to book and pay online.
We are based in Wellingborough, and Basildon is under two hours away round the M25, traffic permitting. Delivery is largely remote: we share designs and working software every week or two and talk through them on video. For factories and warehouses, though, we insist on seeing the floor, so discovery usually includes a site visit and a walk through the process with the people who run it. We come back for training and go-live.
